Our pledge to Leave No Trace at Burning Man 2006More information about general LNT practices are available at the Earth Guardians website Before the event * We pledge to Leave No Trace in and around our campsite, including our own and others' waste and read the survival guide * We will complete our camp’s Leave No Trace Plan * We will plan the assembly and takedown of our structures and decorations and tape the edges of our carpets * Inventory vehicle space for packing out everything and rent an extra vehicle if needed * We will take the packaging off of just about everything and stock up on reusable containers * Shop for simple finger foods and prepare meals in advance to reduce waste and because we probably won't feel like cooking * We will bring no glass, cheap trinkets, small feathers, and anything that might get left on the playa During the event * We will have assigned volunteers check our camp daily * We will clean as we go, realizing that any trash or MOOP (matter out of place) can blow away or be buried at any moment. * We will keep our recyclables, burnables, and non-burnables clearly separated for easy disposal, * We will recycle our aluminum, either on-site or back home * We will have special cleanup crews for any high traffic activities we host and take care of any trash left by guests, invited or otherwise. * We won't light fires on bare ground or dig pits, leaving scars. If we must burn, we’ll use a public burn barrel or burn platform and * We will burn only clean untreated wood or paper (nothing synthetic) and follow the safety guidelines for fires and burn scar prevention. * We won't dig holes more than 6 in. wide and 1 in. deep or trenches * We will keep all items tied or weighted down, and leave papers at home. * We will not dump any grey or black water on the playa * We will encourage members of our camp to carry a personal trash container and a cigarette butt container when they are outside camp. After the event * We will put aside time and have designated volunteers for the final cleanup * We will take all trash in sealed containers to a landfill on the way home. * After cleaning our camp, everyone in our camp will devote at least two hours to the general city cleanup (e.g. trash fence, local port-o-potties, café, etc). * We will leave extra space in every vehicle on the way to the desert, knowing that repacking will inevitably take up more space and ensure that no items can detach during the ride home. * We will pack out everything, including any unevaporated gray water and scum * We won't put trash in or around the port-o-potties * We will help out our neighbors and fellow citizens We will be Good Neighbors * We will encourage our guests to bring their own beverage containers. * We will help out our neighbors * We will adopt the space around our camp, making sure that it stays traceless * We will help careless or forgetful campers artspace Leave No Trace PlanDaniel will be our cleanup czar, overseeing the daily MOOP sweeps and the final cleanup of artspace. Feel free to direct any questions about our LNT or cleanup preparation to him.GallerySince we will be pre-constructing the gallery structure before arriving on the playa, we should be able to eliminate a large amount of construction waste. If you are assisting the raising the gallery structure, please keep track of any hardware connectors being used, making sure that none are lost or discarded. Inspect the structure upon completion, looking specifically for any areas that may have been damaged. If any parts of the frame or boxes have been damaged, immediately asses the surrounding area for any wood splinters, bolts or washers that may have fallen to the ground. During the event, we hope/expect to have a large amount of traffic through the gallery. Keep in mind that we, not our artists or visitors, are responsible for the cleanup of our gallery. Dan will be organizing morning and evening sweeps of the gallery space to prevent any discarded items from remaining on the ground for long periods of time, leading to trampling and further complicating cleanup). Our best tool for keeping our space MOOP-free is to clean up quickly, and not leave a large cleanup task for the end of the event. We plan to store the structure and display boxes for future use, so no part of the gallery structure will be burned or discarded. Please be mindful of this if you are assisting us during disassembly. Before removing any of the display boxes, or disconnecting the walls, check to see that all hardware connectors are in place. Identify any connectors that will be removed during disassembly, and take some time to tighten any that will remain on the structure. Our best defense here is to identify any potential MOOP before it hits the ground. As with assembly, inspect the structure for any damage that may have occurred over the course of the event. Check the ground around any damaged sections before disassembling. Once the gallery is fully disassembled, and packed away, we will be conducting a thorough grid sweep of the gallery space. CampWe will have separate, secured cans for paper waste, glass/plastic and trash. Please make use of them as we go, as it will greatly assist the sorting we will do at the end of the event. Our grey-water evaporation pool (which will be much more effective that we previously thought, thanks to Eric for the new improved design!) will be integrated into the shower design, We will be bringing containers to remove any remaining grey water/grey waste, but the best way to prevent this from becoming overwhelming is simply to conserve on water as we go. Use only as much water for showers as is necessary. The same applies to dish cleaning. We will have a low-flow, high pressure dish station built into the grey water pool, which should minimize water usage, but this still relies on the user to be conservative as well. Our kitchen will be a dedicated space for food storage and preparation. When planning meals, please try to minimize the packing materials as much as possible. Replace plastic or paper wrapping with reusable containers, which not only prevent waste from being generated, but also allow us to store any food waste / leftovers as the week progresses. We ask that anyone preparing a meal plan on cleaning and sweeping the kitchen area once the meal is completed. Also, the 'cooks' should take responsibility (though finding someone else, particularly someone who really enjoyed the meal, is obviously appropriate) for cleaning and sweeping the dome once the meal is done. We will be providing, as a group, the general supplies for keeping a clean camp throughout the week as well as final cleanup materials and tools, including the garbage bags, securable garbage/recycling containers, disassembly tools as well as brooms, shovels, rakes and vice grips for breakdown and final cleanup. Feel free to use them during the week as well! Cleaning up throughout the week will lessen the burden of final cleanup/sweep. Personal ResponsibilityWhen planning your supplies for the week, consider potential waste as you go. Please bring reusable dinnerware, cups and utensils. Disposable packaging materials (clothing items, glow-sticks, personal hygiene items) need not make the trip in the first place, thus eliminating waste before we even arrive. Keep an inventory of all parts of tent/shade (stakes, cords, etc) so that we can keep track of potential MOOP during assemble and after takedown. Consider which costume materials may become loose (glitter, feathers, etc) before packing them. Inspect your vehicle before leaving home (even the smallest oil or coolant leak will present a major cleanup hassle once we arrive on the playa). Generally speaking, just try to be mindful of what you bring with you. MOOP doesn't exist until we bring it. |
